Why I Bought a Gaming Chair?

Actually, a better question would be Why did I wait so long to buy a gaming chair?
It’s not like I don’t spend the bulk of my time in front of a computer or games console. I’m an addict, it’s what I do. I make a living in IT; I write constantly and I game. And this isn’t a recent thing, this has been my life for twenty years now.

But I have always been a kind of make-do and mend type of person. And then one day the budget office chair that I’d bought second-hand many years ago finally said enough was enough and gave up the ghost.
I thought it was time to buy a new second-hand budget office chair.

Needed a New Chair

As I say for twenty years computers and gaming have been a huge part of my life. But a lot can change in twenty years, one of the biggest changes for me was the almost chronic back pain I suffered. I decided that maybe because I spent hours sitting each day, I should treat myself and look at a decent office chair or even a gaming chair.

I did a bit of research. I looked at ergonomics and posture and considered a host of options before finally deciding on the model I thought would be best for me.

I only have one regret: why didn’t I do it twenty years earlier? The results were almost miraculous; the back pain I suffered from was improved within a week and within a month, was all but gone. I could now spend even more time sitting at my PC, and my driving skills improved too!

Do I get a good office chair or a gaming chair?

When deciding what chair to purchase, this was one of the first questions I asked myself. In the end, it was a simple choice. A good gaming chair will work perfectly well as a good office chair, but it doesn’t follow that a good office chair will make a good gaming chair. (And gaming chairs look a lot cooler too)

Absolutely they do. Comfort is crucial if you are into marathon gaming sessions and this has a direct influence on the quality of your gaming experience. Not only are you less likely to suffer those aches and pains that a poor chair will inevitably cause, but you can play for longer.

Being more comfortable, lets you concentrate more on the game and less on the fact that your back feels like it’s getting pummeled with a mallet or that your legs have gone completely numb. Not good when you’re working those pedals.

Why was it right to buy a gaming chair

The only regret I have is not doing it sooner. Buying a gaming chair has improved so many aspects of my life and not just in the gaming sense.

My back is so much better, I don’t creak or groan when I emerge from a gaming or writing marathon. I can work and game for longer without losing concentration, I actually sleep better too!  This may seem a strange benefit, but if you go to bed suffering from the backache of a cramped and uncomfortable gaming session, then sleep is affected. A lot of these benefits came as a surprise to me but three years on they are still there.

It might seem expensive at the time, but a good or even mid-range gaming chair should last you a few years, so actually, the money you shell out at this stage doesn’t seem that expensive when you look at the long term either. Even when it comes to spare parts, you are better served with good premium chairs. The components are standardized and if something should become faulty, it is easy to order a replacement and quickly repair the chair yourself.

But do some research before you take the plunge. The market for gaming chairs is massive and the range of chairs is wide and varied. Chosen well, a gaming chair will make a huge difference to your gameplay, comfort, and health. Not bad for a piece of furniture. And it will continue to do so for years as well.
And then of course there is the coolness factor. I’m too old for cool, but try telling me that when I perched in my black and red leather beast and hammering around Indianapolis Simulator at 240mph!
